Night and Day short film
Introduction
Day and Night is a short film created by Teddy Newton where both day and night are personified as to express a point about co-existence and even dabbles in the topic of racism. The short is about 5 minutes long and blends 2D animation with 3D animation as to make an interesting mix.
Editing
-
Everything is shown through a negative filter as to personify night and day. Showing the same environment but in night and day.
Sound
-
Sounds most typically seen in the day are used to replace typical human sounds, like thunder for the sound of a back crackling.
-
Sound changes to rock when the two start to fight, to convey hate and anger for each other.
-
We get a snippet of Martin Luther King’s speech on the equality of man, as to signify the love for one’s common man and the friendship that night and day experience although they are different.
Mis-En-Scene
-
They both look like they are in the same species but are different people.
-
Night looks at day to see a beautiful women, he tries to see her at night and finds that she isn’t there. Day shows her more women and he tries to see them at night and finds nothing. This shows the differences that both have and that day has certain things that night doesn’t have and night has things that day doesn’t have.
-
We see both night and day enter sun rise and sun set, showing that both are internally the same, connecting to the idea that we all share similar things and we should not resort to hate and violence over differences.
-
Both swap and day becomes night and night becomes day. We see that both can now enjoy each other’s advantages, ending the film off with a good moral.
Conclusion
Day and night tells a message of how beings can co-exist together even if it doesn’t seem likely at first. With the story of how Day and Night, things that seem like complete opposites, find certain aspects of each other beautiful they learn how to like each other.
There is a part in the short film where a segment of Martin Luther King’s speech is used as to show how everyone should try to co-exist with each other even if other people seem different, which is where it slightly dabbles in the topic of racism.
A part where night experiences a sunrise and day experiences a sun set is where we see them as both equal in term of looks, after that they change to their opposite. This shows how each have now found segments within themselves and go off to enjoy the advantages of being day or night.
The animation is interesting as it all uses sounds that are found in the day or night to express the characters. This is a unique way to express each character and their strengths and weaknesses. The blend of 2D animation with 3D animation is good as Pixar specialises in 3D animation, it helps personify the character (The 2D animation) well also bring out the 3D animation.
